Players rarely argue about starters in PokéSurvivor; they argue about the Pokémon they pull from the gacha. These are the community picks we found in videos, posts on X and guide sites, ordered by how many sources single them out, with each one’s game stats and the counterpoints. For the 29 starter partners, see our Pokesurvivor tier list.
Community picks as of (game version c31715d, ), not an official ranking. They’re version-sensitive: the game updates almost daily, and Psychic moves were weakened on October 11. Reddit and Discord aren’t covered yet.

The Community’s Top Picks
Mewtwo
#150 · Psychic · 5-star legendary · hp 118, spd 133, atk 1.55, bst 680 · 5 mentions (strong)
The Pokémon players call the strongest most often. Posts on X say it is close to unkillable by minute 20 and that players had settled on it as the best pick within a day of launch, and one player asks whether anything beats it. A Chinese video’s title calls it super strong with Swords Dance and Harden, and a Spanish strategy video says no Pokémon tops it.
Not everyone agrees: a community-made stat chart puts it only in its A tier (31st to 120th of 966), while a guide site’s stat ranking has it in S. Psychic moves were weakened on October 11, 2026; most of the praise came after that, but the next balance change could move it.
A guide thread on X rates a fully upgraded Mewtwo best and suggests these if you don’t have one: Jirachi (#385 · Steel/Psychic · 5-star legendary · hp 115, spd 120, atk 1.25, bst 600) and Metagross (#376 · Steel/Psychic · 5-star · hp 106, spd 107, atk 1.44, bst 600).

Gengar
#094 · Ghost/Poison · 4-star · hp 97, spd 124, atk 1.42, bst 500 · 3 mentions (moderate)
Three videos single it out: a Spanish creator ranks it second in a top-five list, another video’s title calls its Gengar build very strong, and a third has a “top 3” segment on Gengar.
We only had the titles and chapter names of two of these videos, so their reasons aren’t covered here.

Lucario
#448 · Fighting/Steel · 4-star · hp 102, spd 116, atk 1.33, bst 525 · 2 mentions (moderate)
An Italian creator uses Lucario for S-rank runs, with a build that binds its moves into two Bonds, and the community-made stat chart ranks it 9th of all 966 Pokémon, well above Mewtwo.
One of the two mentions is that stat chart, and we only had the video’s title, description and chapters.

Tentacruel
#073 · Water/Poison · 4-star · hp 106, spd 120, atk 1.14, bst 515 · 1 mention (single source)
One Spanish creator ranks Tentacruel first: its poison keeps damaging enemies over time, and Shell Bell turns that damage into healing.
That’s a single source, and the community-made stat chart only puts it in B. Its case is poison and healing rather than raw stats: its atk is the lowest of these four picks.

Notes and Caveats
Arceus Is Underwhelming as a Partner
#493 · Normal · 5-star legendary · hp 124, spd 128, atk 1.36, bst 720 · 2 sources (moderate)
A player on X expected Arceus to be the strongest partner and found it far behind, and a Spanish strategy video notes that its moves are mostly physical tackles, despite the highest bst on this page.

Legendaries Aren’t Automatically Best
3 sources (moderate)
A player on X finds a 4-star (epic) Pokémon easier to play than legendaries, another was let down by Arceus, and a creator’s top five has no legendary at all. Mewtwo is the exception players name most.

Rayquaza Is Awkward to Use
#384 · Dragon/Flying · 5-star legendary · hp 117, spd 118, atk 1.52, bst 680 · 1 source (single source)
One creator finds Rayquaza hard to use: its large hitbox and weak Flying and Dragon moves hold it back, even with 1.52 atk.

How We Collected These Picks
We read the videos, posts on X and guide sites about the game that we could find, plus its changelog, from launch on October 11 to October 16, 2026. A mention is a separate source that singles a Pokémon out as one of the strongest (for Lucario, one of the two is the community chart’s 9th place). Consensus is strong at five or more sources and moderate at two to four. We read two videos in full through their captions; for the rest we only had titles, descriptions or chapters. Reddit and Discord aren’t covered yet: we’ll add them and review this page weekly. These are player opinions and stat models, not tested results or an official ranking.
Starters vs. Gacha Pokémon
All four picks beat every starter on atk and spd: the 29 starters top out at 1.09 atk and 108 spd. That’s why our Pokesurvivor tier list of starters is provisional and its gaps are small. Pick a starter you enjoy, then play for gacha tickets: a creator’s strategy video suggests not spending upgrades on your starter.
